Isla Mujeres a Historically Influential Island for Caribbean Maritime Travel

Isla Mujeres before the arrival of the European Discovery in the 16th Century was a Mayan Sanctuary dedicated to IXTEL, the Goddess of Love and Fertility. The Colonizers found many female statues and so named the Isle “Isla Mujeres”. In the 17 and 18th Centuries, it was a refuge to Pirates navigating the Caribbean. Its population dedicated to Fishing increased with the Travel Industry discovering this beautiful sanctuary in the 1950’s.
